About Me

My photo
I have recovered from the disease of Alcoholism. I believe there is only one person really,.. everybody. And that peace of mind is everything. -So treat your neighbor as you would treat yourself, because your neighbor IS yourself. I think most of recovery is what I would call common sense, but that learning to be ordinary is a true gift very few people acquire. My ambition is to accept everything unflinchingly, with compassion, and therefore be intrinsically comfortable in my own skin, no matter what. I am comfortable being uncomfortable and am willing to go to any lengths to improve my life. I believe the Big Book was divinely inspired, and is extraordinarily powerful. Unfortunately AA's best kept secret a lot of the time. (In my opinion). I just try to do what works, no matter what it is.

Go see the (free) Heart Shrine Relic Tour if you get the chance..

Relics are things that ? show up in the cremated remains of teachers from the Buddhist tradition. They are handed down to entrusted people who have donated some for a 500 ft bronze statue in India which is built to last 1000 years, where they will be housed to benefit others.
Its a rare sacred treat to be able to see them, (if you like that kind of thing) ..so ? if you are in London for the next three days, you can see the Heart Shrine Relic Tour at the Jamyang Buddhist Centre,The Old Courthouse, 43 Renfrew Road, London SE11 4NA tel: +44 (0) 20 7820 8787 fax: +44 (0) 20 7820 8605 email:admin@jamyang.co.uk

And f you live in the states, (or anywhere across the world really) the Heart Shrine Relic Tour will travel across the US, so check the Tour calender to see if it is passing near you :)

And regardless of all that :) Have a ! fabulous weekend :) Weather is soo nice today. Crisp and dazzlingly sunny. Gorgeous.

Thich Nhat Hanh UK Retreat 2008: Nottingham 24th-29th August

There's still time to book this retreat if you feel the urge.
If applications and payment arrive in their office before Tuesday, you are in with a chance. Still places left I think.

350 or 450 quid for Sunday to Friday. All expenses included.
Accommodation is in the Nottingham university campus. Which is a lovely campus as far as know. Green and rambling. Very easy to get to by train from London.

Thich Nhat Hanh is around about 80 yrs old, and he doesn't teach in the UK very often, so for that reason its good to see him if you get the chance. He does regular retreats in France, but its always easier to see him in the uk I think.
Whatever. Just thought I would let you know.
The London talk is sold out. I didn't manage to get tickets as I didn't get one fast enough. The London talk is worth going to. I certainly enjoyed the last one I went to.
Right better be off. Have a nice Sunday!

15th Century Statue of the Bodhisattva Vajrasattva in Room 33 of the British Museum

This is something for those that are planning on taking the The Vajrasattva Initiation in Nottingham, May 2008 with the Dalia Lama
I find it helpful to 'get to know' the ? Deities in question before I take an initiation. I was drawn to this statue the other day before I heard that the Dalai Lama was doing an initiation next year in May 2008. I nipped in toady in passing to see if there were any Vajrasattva statues in the museum and sure enough. There he/she/it was!!
Cool. Anyway Pictures work for me, so here is a pic of the 15th Century Statue from Nepal. The words underneath are the short form Mantra, which invokes the Deity. But you may be required to have an initiation before you actually use it. (!) Not sure. Haven't done my research yet. Some you do, some you don't. It is always wise to repeat these things respectfully, and that your motive for using them always be 'For the good of all sentient beings'. As opposed to some other motive.
Whatever. Hope you find the picture helpful, if you plan on attending next year. I just did it to help me get to know ? It better.

Its a really lovely statue. So many beautiful artifacts in Room 33..I LOVE that this stuff is so OLD. Real 'Tomb Raider' stuff..Worth a visit.

Total Lunar Eclipse visible in the US at 4am Tuesday morning

Hey I feel pretty weird at the best of times, but the full moon makes me feel even more peculiar! So that's why I've been feeling a bit spaced out today. Moon is 99% full. Due to eclipse pretty soon. Except I won't be able to see it from here, but you guys in the US will
Here's a video explaining what happens and at what time. Pretty cool as it happens. But I love all that 'planet' stuff. Right I'm off. Hope you catch a glimpse of it. There will be plenty of info on this if you google lunar eclipse. See y'all..

Dalai Lama: Vajrasattva Initiation and Bodhisattva Vow. Nottingham Sat 24th-Wed 28th May 2008

Amazing. His Holiness will be teaching in Nottingham in May 2008.. Thanks Johno for emailing me about it.

Regarding tickets. Floor seats are better (usually) as they can be closer to the stage.
Regarding hotels. I think the Nottingham Central Travelodge looks sufficient. 55 quid for a family room that can sleep three if you want ! it to. Starts early on Saturday morning. So book Sat, Sun, Mon and Tues night for the whole event.

There are two main events so to speak.
The Bodhisattva Vow.
The ceremony for engendering the Heart of Awakening - or bodhicitta. To generate the aspiration to attain enlightenment for the benefit of all beings and to enrol on the spiritual career of a Bodhisattva. Cool!

The Vajrasattva Initiation. Wednesday morning 28th May 08.
Vajrasattva is the buddha of purification. The meditation and recitation of Vajrasattva is considered supreme among all practices for the purification of all the accumulated negativities, illness and obscurations that are not inherently part of our true nature. A Sharp Weapon for the Total Elimination of Inner Darkness Caused by the Delusions and Distorted Emotions. Even better!

And some pretty !!! dense teachings, I would imagine. Not easy to grasp with the limits of the human mind. Unless you have many lifetimes of accumulated wisdom to draw from, and an above !!! Average mind. (Neither of which I have..)

General information on the Vajrasattva deity.

Nice old pic of the deity.

Summer Solstice at Stonehenge

Today is the longest day of the year. The Summer Solstice. And if you are a 'die-hard New-ager', you hoof off down to Stonehenge to check out the sunrise. Haven't QUITE got round to it myself, as I am FAR too fond of home comforts, but I BET you there is a !! GREAT vibe there.

Here's some nice photos of it that are on the guardian webpage

By the way. If you are ever a bit doubtful as to when these things happen, just check Jonathan Cainers webpage as he always writes something about it. Eclipses, Solstice's.. you name it!

Free Teleclass about living in the solution regarding Virginia Tech: Thursday, April 19th at 4 pm Mountain Time

Join Rhonda Britten this Thursday, April 19th at 4 pm Mountain Time
Call number: 641-297-5900 or 641-297-5910
Password: 80080

Here's some of her blurb:
I am deeply moved by what occurred at Virginia Tech yesterday morning. I know my heart is heavy and broken. I shared a lot of my feelings on my Blog written at 2 am this morning. And if you are like me, you may need to talk about what it all means....therefore, I invite you to join me on this Free Telecall to share your feelings and perhaps find some solace in this precarious time for our nation.
We may not be able to find any answers but together we might be able to heal some of the pain that this tragic event has stirred up inside of us. I send prayers to you and yours and know that light, and love, and peace surround you during this trying time.
With Fearless Love,
Rhonda

I do not agree with Rhonda that fear is behind all emotional maladjustments to life, but I can still find her very non judgmental, solution orientated approach very helpful. (Take what you like and leave the rest sort of thing) I'm just saying that so that you do not conclude that I think she has all the answers, that she has what I want (as such), or that I trust her motive for saying what she does, or even that I agree, The things she DOES have that I would like to acquire interest me GREATLY and I always love listening to motivational and positive stuff. She's doing a lot right I reckon, but I get tied up when it comes to the money aspect. I think money corrupts a LOT of the time. That part doesn't work for me. Although I have learned a lot from the mind body spirit workshop school, I got a bit fed up after a while having to listen to them re-brand an aspect of the human condition to make it look like they have cornered a unique perspective on life, when the very act of re-branding it adds confusion to the job of trying to understand the process. So I don't buy the ''fear is everything' idea. I just found I ended up reframing her quite complicated ideas into more common sensical terms that had universal applicability. Fear Is a big thing, but it is not everything. Well I think so. Everything? That would be greed, hatred, delusion. Fear is a big part though. But who knows, perhaps I am wrong. I just think if fear was behind the whole thing the Dalai Lama and all those teachers would be focusing on it a LOT more than they do. They don't. That's my guess as someone who is trying to learn from the best examples I am aware of. When I want to know something I just consider the dalai lama and all those people and what they say. I'm just mentioning this because it is free. She is lively and good at speaking honestly, which is a skill in itself. Also she is good at uncovering crappy hidden motives, and being flexible. She makes no attempt to look 'cured' which is humble. And a lot of her stuff seems similar in approach to aa stuff. Whatever. Just don't blow your life savings on the workshops! Sorry if you are a hardened Rhonda Britten fan! Who knows, I could have it all wrong anyway!

May very well have booked up already but: Easter Retreat at Jamyang Fri 6th-2.30pm Mon 9th April

I've not done a 'proper' retreat at Jamjang, but the reason I liked the sound of it was because of the cost and accessibility. Basically if you live near the centre anyway, this would (I think!) be less palaver than hiking up to Amaravati. It could be a but weird having to go home after a 'full on' day. Meaning it might be a bit 'rough; getting dumped back into the 'real world' at the end of the meditation day, but it might not be that bad. To get the full effect, it would probably be best to steer clear of your usual pals, till its over on Monday afternoon. Including discos bars clubs etc etc!!
You can always go AFTER the retreat!
Its 8am to 7pm!! Not for pansies!

Anyway, here's the details: Its £15 to £20 at day apparently. If you are not 'living in'. This is a BARGAIN for those of you that do not know!

Retreat with Teachings on Kindness, Compassion and Understanding
Led by Geshe Tashi

As a river to the sea,
As the sea to the clouds,
As clouds to the land,
So does bodhicitta beautify this world.

This Easter Retreat led by Geshe Tashi is a new addition to the programme, and we hope will become a regular feature in coming years. Previous participants have found retreats led by Geshe Tashi to be a profound and wonderful opportunity for peace and meditation. It is preferable to follow the entire retreat programme. The retreat is organised, however, so you can attend by the day, providing that you attend the full day from 8am to 7pm.

Daily Schedule
8.00 motivation & precepts
9.15 meditation
10.30 teaching
1.30 personal practice or reading lamrim
2.45 meditation
4.15 teaching
5.15 meditation
6.15 prayers and dedications

Please book as soon as possible by contacting the office, as places are likely to go very quickly.

The Lazy Lama. 3 Little talks on Procrastination, and GETTING STUFF DONE

I really like this monk! He reminds me of the little guy in Star Wars. And I like these talks so I just thought I'd post them here. He will be in London on June 6th - June 8th

The Dalai lama is going to do a talk in Houston Texas on May 1st 2007!! (And Massachusetts, May 9)

You LUCKY LUCKY Americans!!!
As far as I know he will not be attending AA meetings at the Lambada Centre, but I think he will be there in spirit!
(Tibetan monks LOVE anything to do with being helpful. It is seen as a MAJOR aspect of growth, so he's on the same page as all you service-junkies out there!)

I reckon he was SO impressed with the good vibrations in Houston Texas, he decided to visit. Perhaps he has been reading Daave's blog?

He is visiting LOADS of places near you. Check the teaching schedule for 2007.!!

Texas, May 1
Talk in Houston, Texas, USA on May 1: His Holiness will give a talk (topic and venue yet to be decided) at Rice University.  Website: www.rice.edu/dalailama

Wisconsin, May 3 & 4
Teaching in Madison, Wisconsin, USA on May 3 & 4: His Holiness will give teachings on tokchod donlekma and lamrim dudon and also confer the Green Tara Empowerment (doljang jenang) at the request of Geshe Lhundup Sopa of Deer Park Center. Contact: www.deerparkcenter.org

WOW!!
The People at Wisconsin are getting a HUGE treat! They get a GREEN TARA EMPOWERMENT!! How Cool! Green Tara is REALLY LOVELY. GREAT for women, and as far as I know I don't think he does this empowerment very much AT ALL. Well I haven't heard about any. You don't actually need an empowerment to use the mantra, but it's SUCH a cool being, that it would be very special to receive some sort of blessing in the presence of the dalai lama, as I'm sure it would reinforce whatever connection you already had. I LOVE the green Tara mantra! I'm tempted to head off to Wisconsin myself! I dare say I should be in the library or something instead though..

The Green Tara 'does' Protection: Here's a quote about her:
Your left hand gives us refuge, showing the Three Jewels;
It says, "You people who see a hundred dangers,
Don't be frightened-I shall swiftly save you!"
First Dalai Lama (1391-1474)

I have an explanatory old Green Tara postunder the Topic 'Protection' on the right hand side.

Chicago, May 6

'Turning the mind around' Series of five Wednesday talks at the Jamyang Centre

Starts today!
Turning the Mind Around. All levels.
Wednesdays 7.30pm. Suggested donation £7/£4

14th, 21st, 28th February, and 7th, 21st March

(Explanatory blurb from the Jamyang website)
We seek happiness all the time and yet rarely find it. This is because we are looking in the wrong places. By turning the mind around to see things in a more realistic way we can be freer, lighter and happier, and mind training or thought transformation practices teach us to do just that. Seemingly simple in concept, yet profound and difficult to actualise, they are revolutionary and desperately needed in a world being destroyed by selfish concern. Geshe Tashi will be using the text The Blade Wheel of Mind Transformation.

4 week Karma Class at the Jamyang Centre. Starts Wed 17th Jan

This looks good so I thought I'd post it if anyone fancies going..

Karma - looking at cause and effect
17, 24, 31 January, 7 February
Wednesdays 7.30pm
suggested donation £7/£4

(blurb from the Jamyang webpage. See links menu on right hand side)
Karma is a fundamental Buddhist concept, and in this very fragile world, this understanding and practice will be very powerful, individually and collectively. Our individual world as well as the world community is constantly evolving, mainly due to our actions. It is very important for the Buddhist practitioner to know the processes of Karma, and how our actions effect not just the individual but also the worldwide community

The Teacher
Geshe TashiTsering has been the resident teacher at Jamyang since 1994. Born in Tibet, he studied for the Lharampa Geshe degree (the equivalent of a PhD) at Sera-mey Monastic University in South India, gaining the highest marks possible at every level of the sixteen-year course. He teaches in English and is renowned for the warmth, clarity and humour with which he makes complex subjects accessible to Western students.

Geshe Tashi is the creator of the FPMT’s Foundation of Buddhist Thought, a two-year course on the basics of Tibetan Buddhism and author of The Four Noble Truths and Buddhist Psychology. He also teaches widely in the UK, Europe and elsewhere.

The Jungian Model: I think the Monday 4th Dec 7pm talk looks good

I think it's very useful to have some sort of insight into the Jungian model. If you really don't know any Jungian stuff, then I think this will be very useful.
Jungian stuff is where all the archetype stuff comes from, and shadow work. Its a good model of reality really. In my opinion. Not perfect, but it'll do for now. If you come from a troubled family background this stuff helps.

Heres some blurb on tomorrow evenings talk..
Reclaiming Mother, Reclaiming Father
BENIG MAUGER

Our earliest experiences and relationships shape us but need not determine how we choose to live. Living soulfully involves not only accepting our wounds as our greatest gifts, but also our life initiations as spiritual tasks of empowerment.

This talk will look at early life, particularly the prenatal and birth experience, as our first formative initiation. Benig Mauger will explain the way in which archetypal soul and family patterns are inherited and how our first relationships form a template for all future relationships. Although our earliest experiences often diminish our ability to live from our essential self, she will discuss how we can heal early wounds, release and transform soul bonds and live authentic empowered lives.

Benig Mauger is a Jungian psychotherapist and pioneer in pre and peri-natal psychology. She is a birth teacher and author of Songs from the Womb, Healing the Wounded Mother and Reclaiming Father: The Search for Wholeness in Men, Women and Children. She has a private practice in Ireland and teaches internationally.

Mon 13th Nov. 7pm: A Tibetan Monk doing a talk called: Happiness: A Makeover for the Mind

Monday 13 November Talk at 'Alternatives' (See sidebar under Mind Body Spirit for link)
Happiness: A Makeover for the Mind

By: GESHE TASHI TSERING. (From the Jamyang Centre)

The bottom line in life is to be happy. Everything anyone does, at the deepest level, is motivated by a wish to be happy. Happiness is a state of mind - an obvious statement and yet it seems we see happiness, not as this, but as a state achieved through the acquisition and manipulation of external phenomena. The car, the job, the relationship is happiness. Buddhism asserts this is fundamentally incorrect and the reification of phenomena leads to us falsely seeing them as causes for our happiness. We are simply looking for happiness in the wrong place and only when we turn inwards and examine the mind will we be turn this around.

In this talk, Geshe Tashi will explore how ancient Buddhism wisdom can transform our minds into true happiness.

Geshe Tashi Tsering is a highly eloquent Tibetan monk who has represented HH The Dalai Lama on many occasions and who is well known for his great warmth and humour. He has been the resident teacher at Jamyang Buddhist Centre in London for the last 13 years. He is the creator of the Foundation of Buddhist Thought, a two-year correspondence course on Tibetan Buddhism, and the author of The Four Noble Truths.

What a cool Being!

"Every person whose heart is moved by love and compassion, who deeply and sincerely acts for the benefit of others without concern for fame, profit, social position, or recognition expresses the activity of Chenrezig."
Bokar Rinpoche
-- Chenrezig: Lord of Love

Chenrezig may be the most popular of all Buddhist deities, except for Buddha himself -- he is beloved throughout the Buddhist world.

In his Teaching on the Chenrezig Sadhana, Kalu Rinpoche said "one does not think of the deity's body as solid or material, made of flesh and blood like one's ordinary body, or made of metal or stone like an idol. One thinks of it as appearance that is inseparable from emptiness, like a rainbow or like a reflection in a mirror."

We have flesh and blood bodies, but not as much compassion as we would like to have, and Chenrezig has a body made of rainbows, and boundless impartial compassion. When we put those two extremes together, in the Chenrezig meditation, we move in the direction of manifesting as a being with a flesh-and-blood body and unlimited compassion -- with maybe a few rainbows thrown in for decoration.

Well. There are some very inspiring quotes about this Being.
It sunds to me as though this being is all about warmth and concern for ALL our fellow men. Even the ones that are difficult to love.
I see compassion as the OPPOSITE of resentment. Because the more I am able to feel compassion, the less I am able to justify ANY resentment. I see Compassion as Mercy. A merciful heart. I LOVE the prayer (to your higher power0 which is simply 'Mercy'. I find it very moving, but then I find all prayers, hymns, you name it, very moving. So gawd knows.
But I think for those of you that can still feel the bitterness of judgment in your hearts. See this empowerment as a way of softening your heart, and truly noticing the wounds ALL men carry. Instead of noticing all the things others do which seem to be in opposition to our desires.
Souns like a love fest basically. A love in!
Very cool. Anything that moves you further away from resentment can only be a good thing.
I think this empowerment sounds very cool. Its bound to be REALLY popular.
Oh well.
