Article in the Times about Derren Brown's programme
I dare say they will repeat it ad infinitum, so no hurry to see it on Friday.
This ia a David Blaine spoof and is LIBERALLY sprinkled with the use of the F word, so please do NOT watch it if you are offended by the use of the F word. Personally I loved it. Made me laugh. but you may not. ?
I confess I really like Mr Blaine and Mr D Brown, but I don't know how they do what they do. But suffice to say I have no problem with the idea that mind over matter stuff is very real. That's my view, so I like people that look as though they are doing that stuff SOMETIMES. As opposed to ALL the time. I figure some are legit tricks, and some are not. I have no idea which percentage. 80/20?, 90/10?, 95/5?. No idea. I would say it was a smaller proportion. But anyway, they are great showmen, regardless of how they do what they do. I like em, whether they are simple magicians or not.
My favorite D Blaine quote. "Soft is stronger than hard."
His site is quite interesting. Lots of video stuff, and nice pics. Mr D Brown's is much more unassuming. But I confess I LOVE his understated reserve. Very British. But that's just me.
About Me
- An Irish Friend of Bill
- I have recovered from the disease of Alcoholism. I believe there is only one person really,.. everybody. And that peace of mind is everything. -So treat your neighbor as you would treat yourself, because your neighbor IS yourself. I think most of recovery is what I would call common sense, but that learning to be ordinary is a true gift very few people acquire. My ambition is to accept everything unflinchingly, with compassion, and therefore be intrinsically comfortable in my own skin, no matter what. I am comfortable being uncomfortable and am willing to go to any lengths to improve my life. I believe the Big Book was divinely inspired, and is extraordinarily powerful. Unfortunately AA's best kept secret a lot of the time. (In my opinion). I just try to do what works, no matter what it is.

The Spiritual Life: One foot in the 'World', One foot in the 'Ether'
This really relates to the previous post called American Beauty: "But it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world".
Do you notice that when you watch that clip from yesterdays post about the movie American Beauty,, that it ? 'connects' you to another ? 'transcendent', 'ethereal' mind state?
Sometimes I call it being a 'space cadet'.
Sometimes I call it being 'tuned in'.
Sometimes I call it 'transcendent'
It feels a little ? 'ethereal', high or spaced out..
Like the veil between this world and ? Another world gets just a little bit thinner. Feels weird, but in a GOOD way.
Well that's what life is like when your MOTIVE is to be of MAXIMUM HELPFULNESS, and your life is about SERVICE. That is the ? 'magic fairy dust' I was talking about* that comes into existence when we think of what we can do for others, and go out of our way to REALLY help newcomers. Its VERY cool.
But I use this term a LOT (One foot in the 'World', one foot in the 'Ether') to describe what it feels like to be 'living along spiritual lines.'
Its ADDICTIVE once you get a 'taste' 'of it. Feels thoroughly blissful. I can highly recommend it!!
And what do you have to do to get this thing?
Well, my theory is
Constant thought of others in the form of a MOTIVE to be of MAXIMUM HELPFULNESS, 'in ALL your affairs'.
There is a LOT to this and I am in the process of TRYING to commit it to posts, but haven't finished it. Its the best part of my programme, and one of the most laborious to explain. Ah well. I will get it done at some point.
Anyway. Have yourselves a DANG good Tuesday!
*See post called "Magic Fairy Dust: Constant Thought of others, combined with MOTIVE to be of MAXIMUM helpfulness"

American Beauty: "But it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world"
"I guess I could be pretty pissed off about what happened to me
... but it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world.
Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once, and it's too much,
my heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst...
...and then I remember to relax,
and stop trying to hold on to it,
and then it flows through me like rain
and I can't feel anything but gratitude
for every single moment
of my stupid little life...
You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure.
But don't worry...
You will someday."
-From American Beauty Script (at the end)
"When you stop seeing beauty, you start growing old"
U2. Summer Rain Lyrics.
I really like this end bit of the film. It captures the ? Abandonment of ? 'reason' as such when one 'sees' beauty. It's everywhere really. If you choose to look for it. Its not something that comes from the mind. Its a ? 'seeing' that comes from the heart. Or something. Anyway. Its not the ? Brain' that's sees this stuff. It is not an 'idea'. But you know when you have it. Like most really good things in life, -Very hard to describe.
There is also a quality of timelessness that I really like about this segment of the film. It has an 'air' of the poem by William Blake.
To see a World in a grain of sand,
And a Heaven in a wild flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand,
And Eternity in an hour
Blake is one cool geezer. From early childhood he had visions of angels. He is buried very close to Old street station (Bunhill Fields Burial Ground, City Road) and you should go and see th grave if you happen to be in the neighborhood. Here is a website with some information about him and the grave.
"One of Blake's strongest objections to orthodox Christianity is that he felt it encouraged the suppression of natural desires and discouraged earthly joy."
(From wikipedia page about William Blake What a COOL guy. I LOVE his attitude to ? 'religion'. Right up my street!

Summer Solstice at Stonehenge
Here's some nice photos of it that are on the guardian webpage
By the way. If you are ever a bit doubtful as to when these things happen, just check Jonathan Cainers webpage as he always writes something about it. Eclipses, Solstice's.. you name it!

Why do some people 'get it' and others don't?
Mind you, I think even when one is 'correctly orientated' that the work that is required to live peacefully, and reasonably happily, can be extremely demanding in some ways. So just being 'ready' doesn't make it any easier as such.
Doesn't mean you get any shortcuts though. No easier softer way I'm afraid. You just get to do what the rest of us have been doing, which is some pretty unflattering truth telling about ourselves and our lives. It doesn't sound like much, but its REALLY worth it. And it means you can be there for the NEXT suffering alcoholic that shows up and doesn't know what the ! hell they are doing. And that's the main thing. Funnily enough.
The newcomer is often the last to know he or she is doing well. Newcomers are notoriously c**p at 'seeing' their own progress in the beginning? EVERYONE can see it except them! Its kind of funny really.

A strange 'dual' mind space shared by myself and my Sponsees. (And their Sponsees)
I mention this so that you know that if you are going through the Steps with one of my Sponsees, that there is a STRONG likelihood that you will also inherit this mind space. (Usually sometime between step 5 and 9) Provided you are following the suggestions given to you!! Not just in outward appearance, but in MOTIVATION also.
Based on the little research I have done in AA, I have found that this mind state is NOT a common experience. I could be proved wrong, but that is what I have found so far.
It might sound a bit crap (So what? sort of thing) to someone who is new, but, speaking as someone with long term sobriety, I can tell you I REALLY value this faculty of the mind. It provides an opportunity to lend calm objectivity to an otherwise heated and unreasonable mind set. I am EXTREMELY grateful for this ability. And it makes me VERY happy to have found out (via my obedient guinea-pig Sponsees) that it is so transferable! So thank you for providing me with that information!
Anyway, I need to study!!!!!

The Prestige
I took a study break and went to see The Prestige, and it is indeed an eye-candy feast for the ladies! I heartily recommend! Dave Bowie too! Well anyway the reason I liked it was because it was all about magic, real and imagined, and effortless showmanship and the brutal reality of trying to be excellent at ANYTHING.
But anyway, just thought I'd mention it because it was one of those rare cinema occasions where you are pleasantly surprised instead of feeling disappointed. But I suppose I DO believe in 'magic' as well so that had a lot to do with why I enjoyed it.
Trailer for the film here

Wow. Even I am surprised how quickly I get over things these days
Even though I've seen it work a million times, I'm still in awe when I see new people get better. It stuns me to see people transform.
I find a BIG factor in healing is 'surrendering to the moment' no matter what it is. All I know is that I am in a position after many years practice (!!) to to really accept whatever I happen to be experiencing. Even though it might be unpleasant. The weird thing is, that the more I seem to accept it, the quicker it changes into something else.
I don't know about you, but to me this is INFINITELY better than any therapy I've ever seen or come across. I ADORE the totally inexplicable aspects of this recovery path. It IS like witnessing miracles every day! I'm not kidding, but I really DO rely on them! Sounds really naff I know, but I really DO.
I am SO glad I do NOT rely on the rule of logic or therapeutic precedent to guide me through these aspects of my dysfunction.
Isn't recovery amazing? I think it is.
So many times I have been faced with (what I consider to be) really bleak odds, yet somehow things just 'change' for the better. I have NO idea how it works, but it is blissful and wonderful and I love it!
Sorry if that makes you want to puke, but I'm afraid that's the mood I'm in and I can't help it.
The reason I'm so impressed with how quickly I feel good again is because I KNOW enough about the type of mental symptoms I can experience to know that IT IS NOT NORMAL to be restored to wellbeing as quickly as I do. Its really not normal. I have done my research and I know about these things!
Sod therapy! Give me the healing powers of this spiritual programme anyway!
(Sorry I don't mean to offend those of you that make different choices, I only speak for MYSELF remember!)
By the way I like SOME therapists. They have their uses. I just PREFER this method, that's all. Also I don't have a 'reason' why I make that choice. My choices are made for me by the 'track record'. Whatever works BEST, well that's what I do, NOMATTER WHAT IT IS.
So if in future sometime, I were to come across a therapist that could create more powerful healing than my spiritual programme, I would dump the programme like a hot brick, and do what the therapist said. The reason I HAVEN'T done that is because my EXPERIENCE suggests the spiritual programme I have been shown is by FAR the most powerful choice. That's all.

Jonathan Cainers' thoughts on what it might be like being Enlightened
Anyway I always like his view on things, but I like this passage and the view it provides of what enlightenment might look like. It's actually not far off the string theory view of reality. -Well in my opinion anyway. They seem very similar to me. Anyway just thought I'd repeat it here, as I just like anything to do with monastics really..
Place yourself, please, in a dreamlike state. Relax. Let your mind go blank for a moment. Be willing to float in and out of this world – and a thousand others. Imagine that you can levitate if you only make your body feel light enough. Pretend that, if you wish to, you can turn back the clock. Or send it sweeping forward to the future.
Envisage the ability to see into other people’s minds. Envisage, too, the power to influence their thoughts. You can do anything you want to. You can be whatever you dream of being.
You are under the influence of no drug. Your mind is perfectly sane and rational. You just happen to know about the existence of another dimension. You know how to enter and leave it at will. This all seems perfectly normal to you.
Congratulations. You have just taken your first step into a mystical, timeless realm.
You have drifted a little closer to the state that some people call enlightenment. And, just possibly, you have glimpsed the future of humanity. You may be only pretending – but on the path of self-discovery, pretence is a key part of the process.
You have entered what psychologists call the world of the shared subconscious. You have encountered what artists and writers call “the muse”. It is a delicate, fragile place. Yet it is full of wealth and wonder. Tap into it and you can bring forth a flow of inspiration. Siphon off a symphony. Draw down a design. Fish out, from this wondrous river, as many inventive ideas as you care to. You will never drain it dry.
We all enter this world from time to time. Yet our visits there are only fleeting. Even the greatest creatives cannot dwell there more than moment. It is too fluid, too different, too weird. To live there all day every day, you must either go mad...or become a monk.

Reality is weird with a capital W! Watch this: BBC Horizon: INFINITE numbers of Parallel Universes..
Some blurb about the programme from the BBC Horizon page....
Horizon: BBC Two 9.00pm Thursday 14 February 2002
Everything you're about to read here seems impossible and insane, beyond science fiction. Yet it's all true.
Scientists now believe there may really be a parallel universe - in fact, there may be an infinite number of parallel universes, and we just happen to live in one of them. These other universes contain space, time and strange forms of exotic matter. Some of them may even contain you, in a slightly different form. Astonishingly, scientists believe that these parallel universes exist less than one millimetre away from us. In fact, our gravity is just a weak signal leaking out of another universe into ours.
The same but different
For years parallel universes were a staple of the Twilight Zone. Science fiction writers loved to speculate on the possible other universes which might exist. In one, they said, Elvis Presley might still be alive or in another the British Empire might still be going strong. Serious scientists dismissed all this speculation as absurd. But now it seems the speculation wasn't absurd enough. Parallel universes really do exist and they are much stranger than even the science fiction writers dared to imagine.
Greater dimensions
It all started when superstring theory, hyperspace and dark matter made physicists realise that the three dimensions we thought described the Universe weren't enough. There are actually 11 dimensions. By the time they had finished they'd come to the conclusion that our Universe is just one bubble among an infinite number of membranous bubbles which ripple as they wobble through the eleventh dimension.
A creative touch
Now imagine what might happen if two such bubble universes touched. Neil Turok from Cambridge, Burt Ovrut from the University of Pennsylvania and Paul Steinhardt from Princeton believe that has happened. The result? A very big bang indeed and a new universe was born - our Universe. The idea has shocked the scientific community; it turns the conventional Big Bang theory on its head. It may well be that the Big Bang wasn't really the beginning of everything after all. Time and space all existed before it. In fact Big Bangs may happen all the time.
Of course this extraordinary story about the origin of our Universe has one alarming implication. If a collision started our Universe, could it happen again? Anything is possible in this extra-dimensional cosmos. Perhaps out there in space there is another universe heading directly towards us - it may only be a matter of time before we collide.

You CAN 'duplicate' the Recovery of the First 100 AA Members
Says the first 100 members of AA actually!
How come?
Because, the first 100 members tell us QUITE CATEGORICALLY that..
'To DUPLICATE, with such backing, what WE have accomplished is ONLY a matter of willingness, patience and labor'. p163
Doesn't say 'except for Mary, Dave, or Pete' does it? Well then..
How cool is that!
So all those REALLY COOL 'PROMISES' such as..
'We have entered the world of the Spirit'. P84
The joy of living we REALLY have, even under pressure and difficulty. p15
There is scarcely any form of trouble and misery which has not been overcome among us. p15
When we look back, we realize that the things which came to us when we put ourselves in God’s hands were better than ANYTHING we could have planned. p100
There exists among us a fellowship, a friendliness, and an understanding which is INDESCRIBABLY WONDERFUL. p17
We have found much of heaven and we have been rocketed into a fourth dimension of existence of which we had not even dreamed. p25
Apply to YOU!!!!
(provided you 'do' 'willingness, patience and labor.') -in the service of doing EXACTLY what the first 100 members did, as explained in EXTREMELY UNCOMPROMISING STATEMENTS throughout the Big Book. Cool!!
Well that's what I've found!
By the way ''To DUPLICATE, what we have accomplished' does NOT mean I get to go back in time and live as a first 100 member in 1935.
They would have to re write that statement to read ''To DUPLICATE, our lives, EXACTLY as we lived them, including assuming our identities'
But it doesn't say that..
It says ''To DUPLICATE, what we have accomplished'
What did they 'accomplish'?
Well At the time of writing that referred to the BENEFITS THEY HAD EXPERIENCED AS A RESULT OF FOLLOWING THE PROGRAMME OF RECOVERY AS OUTLINED IN THE PAGES OF THE BASIC TEXT.
What are the benefits? I hear you ask..
The 'benefits' are what I call the PROMISES.
I will explain them in another post. But its VERY IMPORTANT that you know what they are.
That why its the FIRST 'job' I give Sponsees.
Just click on the label at the top of the post called Promises' to see the 20 other posts that contain references to them. To perhaps help you figure out what they are. The Topic of Promises is also in the sidebar. Along with all the others.

Consequences. 'Luck'. 'The little things. There's nothing bigger, is there?' Protection.
'The little things. There's nothing bigger, is there?'
Motive to be of Maximum Helpfulness.
'Luck'.
Sliding Doors. Vanilla sky. It's a Wonderful Life.
Karma is just another word to describe the law of cause and effect. Or CONSEQUENCES.
Sliding Doors is a 1998 film with Gwyneth Paltrow in it.
The story roughly goes that: Young Helen is fired from her job at a PR company, and when the sliding doors of the tube car close on her, we start to see what would have happened if she'd made the train, and if she hadn't.
This film is about how your life can go in TWO ENTIRELY DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS based on ONE very SEEMINGLY TRIVIAL event.
Some people would say the thing that determines which 'fork in the road' we are drawn down is due to 'LUCK' Luck is the word I use when I talk about these things, but really I don't know what word to use for it. Some would call it DESTINY. All I know is that I always feel that my life and everything I value in it is ALWAYS COMPLETELY IN THE LAP OF THE GODS. And that EVERY LITTLE THING I do, or don't do, no matter how small, creates my future life. Good or bad.
I also believe that the gods and devas ?? Whatever they are, really DO exist and CAN intervene and try to help us steer our lives to better things. But I also believe that we 'earn' this 'protection' MAINLY through the action of
'CONSTANT thought of others and how we may help meet their needs' (p20)
And I think this is why the big book tells us that:
'OUR VERY LIVES, as ex-problem drinkers, depend upon our CONSTANT thought of others and how we may help meet their needs' (p20)
And:
'For if an alcoholic failed to perfect and enlarge his spiritual life through work and self-sacrifice for others, he could NOT survive the CERTAIN trials and low spots ahead' (p15)
And:
'Keep on the firing line of life with these MOTIVES and God WILL, (not might) keep you unharmed' (p102)
Another film which dramatizes THE SAME THING is the film Vanilla Sky with Tom cruise.
Only in this film the 'trivial event' is not a sliding door on a tube, but a momentary whim to get a short lift from Cameron Diaz.
Heres a segment of the script of the Vanilla Sky film.
Tech support:
(referring to Sofia) 'This was a kind woman...
an individual...
more than your equal.
You barely knew her in real life, but in your Lucid Dream...
she was your savior.
(and later..)
Your friend Brian Shelby threw a three-day memorial in your old home.
He was a true friend.
You were missed, David.
It was Sofia who never fully recovered.
It was she who somehow knew you best...
and like you, she never forgot that one night...
where true love seemed possible.
Consequences, David.
It's the little things.
Tom Cruise:
The little things.
There's nothing bigger, is there?
Because (as these films so eloquently dramatize) DESPERATLEY IMPORTANT OUTCOMES can hinge on SEEMINGLY INSIGNIFICANT ACTIONS, I know for a fact that I CANNOT foresee the terrible or brilliant CONSEQUENCES of ANY of my actions. So I RELY COMPLETELY on the 'gods' and devas ?? to GUIDE ME 'in all my affairs' so that UNLIKE Gwyneth in sliding doors and UNLIKE Tom in Vanilla Sky, I AM LOOKED AFTER AND PROTECTED FROM THE POTENTIALLY TERRIBLE CONSEQUENCES OF EVEN THE TINIEST DECISIONS.
So basically that's what I mean by 'luck'
So that's why I try (very imperfectly) to look at what I can contribute to any situation. Purely as a form of SELF PROTECTION or 'LIFE INSURANCE'.
I am NOT asked to SUCCEED in my attempts to try to be helpful. I am just asked to TRY to be of MAXIMUM HELPFULNESS.
So basically that's what motivates me to practice
'CONSTANT thought of others and how we may help meet their needs' (p20)
'in all my affairs' and to maintain a HELPFUL MOTIVE fairly constantly.
It doesn't mean that people always like me or agree with me. But that's not the point. That's not what the big book promises us. We are promised that we will 'remain unharmed'. I frequently meet people who try to make my life difficult and have a hostile attitude toward me, but I am able to remain unharmed, and that is what is important.
The film 'What a wonderful life' also dramatizes the HUGE long term consequences of what seem like VERY SMALL THINGS at the time.
This is the nature of life I'm afraid. EVERYTHING is important. All the time! In ways we just can't even imagine. Our only hope is divine help! But thankfully the big book PROMISES us exactly that in exchange for 'CONSTANT thought of others and how we may help meet their needs' (p20)
So we can rest easy!
Some quotes that spring to mind are..
"We cannot do great things in this world, we can only do little things with great love" ~ Mother Teresa
And
'You cannot change the world, but you CAN change the world for one man'
Phew! Hope that explains it!
I encourage you to watch these films more than once, so that the message of them really sinks in.
Just try to earn as many 'good karma points' as you can! It all helps!
By the way that does NOT mean give up your day job to become a missionary in Africa! It's god's will for us to be HAPPY JOYOUS AND FREE, (p133) so if being a nun DOESN'T make you happy, joyous and free, then its obviously NOT god's will for you! Thank god!

Wordless transmission. It's a HIGH teaching.
A sunset
A flower
The feeling of love you have for another human being
The special feeling you have when you are in the same room as someone who truly supports you.
Basically the BEST, highest teachings go way beyond words. Words and language are simply far too crude and 'clunky' to grasp these refined 'truths'. So please have respect for these type of learning experiences. They go very deep and are very profound. I doubt the human language will ever be able to describe reality as we get to experience it. But that's ok. Words are just a convention we are stuck with to communicate basic stuff with one another. I don't think they were ever intended to reflect reality accurately.
This is why I favor the 'spiritual' route to freedom rather than the therapy route. Therapy relies on language and the ability of our mind to grasp concepts. To me growth as a human being is infinitely more complex than any of those very superficial functions. I MUCH prefer the infinite complexity of higher truths, as revealed to us in ways I don't suppose I will ever understand. We need to be comfortable with a path that embraces and makes use of faculties we do not and cannot understand. I love the mystery of a spiritual path. To me it is by far the most sophisticated learning curve there is. It would take many lifetimes and a very special type of person to be able to grasp even the beginnings of reality. And I think reality is infinitely more weird than you could possibly imagine. Thank god we have a higher power who understands it a bit better than we do!

as we understood Him.
Chapter 5. HOW IT WORKS page 63
As we felt new power flow in,

it is not probable that we are going to be inspired at all times.
Chapter 4. WE AGNOSTICS page 51
When many hundreds of people are able to say
